As the oldest classic race event in Asia, the 54th Macau Grand Prix was held at the legendary temporary street course, Ghia Circuit, from November 15th to the 18th. It was also the 25th race since YOKOHAMA began to supply F3 tires in 1983.
Renowned as the race of F3 champions, the event attracted top ranked drivers from many F3 championship series all over the world. The list of competitors included Kamui Kobayashi, who was ranked fourth in the EURO F3 series, and top drivers of the Japanese F3 championship series, such as the reigning champion Kazuya Ohshima, Roberto Streit, Oliver Jarvis, Kodai Tsukakoshi and Takuya Izawa.
The British F3 Champion, Marko Asmer, led the early stages of this event. He registered the fastest time in the first qualifying session on Thursday and Romain Grosjean, the EURO F3 Champion followed. But in the second qualifying session on Friday, Jarvis was the fastest and took the pole position for the qualifying race that was held on Saturday, November 17. Asmer was second and Tsukakoshi, from Manor Motorsport, followed in third.
At the start of the ten lap qualifying race, pole sitter Jarvis was passed by Grosjean. In the following echelon, Tsukakoshi, Edoardo Mortara and Sebastien Buemi, who started from the fourth and ninth grid respectively, got into a tangle on the run down to Lisboa and went off course. Fortunately, the Japanese could return to the race by driving through an escape zone, but the other two cars halted on the track, which caused the Safety Car to be called out as early as the opening lap.
Soon after the race resumed, Jarvis managed to overtake the leader, Grosjean, and regained the top slot. On lap 8, the race was stopped by the red flag because of Atte Mustonen's crash and the result was determined by running order at the end of lap 7. Consequently, Jarvis acquired the pole position for the final race. Asmar came in second, followed by Ohshima who jumped up from the sixth grid.
On Sunday, November 15th, the final 15 lap race was started with Jarvice in the lead. Ohshima followed him and Sam Bird came up to third from the fifth grid. However, Bird's pace wasn't quick enough to keep Asmer behind and eventually he was passed by the latter on lap 2. Two laps later, Tsukakoshi starting from the ninth grid, also went by Bird and tookover fourth place.
The gaps between the leading drivers began to spread from lap 5. But the Safety Car was called out as Frank Mailleux crashed on lap 6 and those gaps were reduced to nothing instantly. When the race resumed on lap 11, the race leader, Jarvis, started to push hard and drew away from his followers to take the crown of the Macau Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, second place was contended for by two Japanese drivers, which attracted much attention. After moving up to third on lap 11, Tsukakoshi overtook Ohshima on lap 13 and finished in second. As Ohshima kept the third position until the end, the podium was totally dominated by drivers from the Japanese F3 championship series.
