The seventh round of the series, Super GT in Kyusyu 250km, which could be a showdown for the title race of the 2011 season, was held at Autopolis International Racing Course in Ohita prefecture after a two year absence from the venue.

In contrast to the pleasant autumn weather of the qualifying day, it was rather chilly on Sunday because of the overcast sky. Even though it had been getting warmer during the midday, the air temperatures were still staying around 17 degrees Celsius with the surface at 24 degrees when the race got underway.

Behind the wheels of ADVAN Kondo GT-R and WedsSport ADVAN SC430 at the start were Bjorn Wirdheim and Tatsuya Kataoka respectively. Both of them kept their starting positions on the opening lap but the Swede overtook Kataoka two laps later and moved up to 14th. Then Wirdheim improved his pace to a 1'44" bracket, while the Japanese was almost a second per lap slower, without changing positions for a while. However, after a few laps from the start, the opponents in front of them started to lose their momentum and thus the two ADVAN shoed car's impetuous climb began.

Wirdheim overtook EPSON HSV-010 on Lap 8 to move up to 13th and gained one more place on the next lap. Kataoka also followed his path and was in 13th on Lap 9. The opponents were on the softer tires at the start because they chose them for the Super Lap qualifying session, aiming at better grid positions. But, of course, their softer tires soon began to degrade and many of the opponents were forced to switch to undesired two stop strategies, instead of just one stop. In such a situation, the two ADVAN equipped cars steadily moved up through the field with consistent pace and were already running in the points on Lap 13, as ADVAN Kondo GT-R was in ninth and WedsSport ADVAN SC430 in tenth.

On Lap 24, the Kondo team called to come in the pit to Wirdheim who did a great job and was running in fifth at that time and he handed the car to Hironobu Yasuda. Meanwhile, Kataoka extended his stint to Lap 30 with very consistent drive and then changed to Seiji Ara, after temporarily moving up to as high as second.

When all cars had completed their mandatory pit stops on Lap 35, Yasuda was in seventh and Ara was in tenth but their lap times were apparently faster than those of the direct opponents. Indeed Ara overtook D'Station KeePer SC430 at the entry for the second hairpin corner on Lap 41 to move up to ninth and, four laps later, he made an attack on Weider HSV-010 at Turn 1 from the outside line. Trying to keep his position, the driver in the Honda put up stiff resistance and the two cars actually hit against each other but Ara kept his cool, as he said later, "The Honda went wide (at the corner), so I was sure I would be able to pass it by crossing the lines." And he was right. Ara took eighth place by overtaking the Honda at the entry of Turn 2.

Ahead of them, Yasuda caught Keihin HSV-010 within his shooting range and the gap between them was now just a few tenth. Then he made a good exit from the last corner of Lap 46 and was able to use slip streaming with the Keihin Honda, which led to an overtaking move at Turn 1. Thus ADVAN Kondo GT-R was now sixth.

With only a few laps to go, it looked like there wouldn't be any more position changes. But the car running in second suddenly halted at the first corner of penultimate lap due to a problem on its engine. This gave everyone except for the winner a one place promotion, therefore, ADVAN Kondo GT-R eventually finished the race in fifth and WedsSport ADVAN SC430 in seventh. Despite starting from the back end of the grids, both cars earned valuable championship points, thanks to the consistent performance of the ADVAN tires.

In the GT300 class, R&D Sport Legacy B4 with Tetsuya Yamano behind the wheel made a very good getaway from the pole position and led the field when they entered Turn 1. Behind the Yamano's Subaru, Yuya Sakamoto in JLOC Lamborghini RG-3, Takeshi Tsuchiya in ZENT Porsche RSR and Hiroki Kato in Evangelion RT Test Type-01 Apple Shiden followed in the exactly same order with their qualifying results.

In contrast, Nobuteru Taniguchi at the wheel of Hatsune Miku GoodSmile BMW immediately gained two positions, after stating from the seventh grid. This meant he was now ahead of his championship rival, Jimgainer Dixel Dunlop 458. On Lap 2, Tsuchiya moved up to second but Sakamoto didn't allow him to pull away. With Kato joining to them soon, the three cars went on in a close pack for a while.

Well ahead from this pack, Yamano's pace was outstanding and he steadily built up the gap with the rest of the field lap after lap. Consequently, he had an almost ten second advantage when he came in the pit to change to Kota Sasaki on Lap 24. Then, while the interim leader, Tsuchiya, tried to pull away, the fight between other two in the group became fiercer and they made contact each other on Lap 26. There was no position change because of this incident but Kato managed to pass Sakamoto on the next lap and the latter spun immediately after that. The Lamborghini driver didn't lose his position by the spin but the gap with Kato now became much larger.

Sakamoto handed the wheel of the Lamborghini to Takayuki Aoki on Lap 28 and Tsuchiya also changed to Akihiro Tsuzuki five laps later. This gave the slot of interim leader to Kato in the Evangelion Shiden but, at this time, Sasaki driving the R&D Legacy was already in second just 35 seconds behind the Shiden. When Kato came in the pit on Lap 35, Sasaki's Subaru passed through the pit straight to take over the position of race leader and the second driver of the Shiden, Kazuho Takahashi, rejoined to the race in second.

About four seconds behind Takahashi, SG Changi IS350 was running in third. The car had qualified in lowly 14th but its starting driver, Ryo Orime, moved up to tenth, before changing to Alexandre Imperatori relatively early on Lap 17. From then on, the Swiss's consistent pace brought the car to the position and he was now rapidly closing the gap with the Shiden driver. On Lap 47, however, these two cars hit each other at Turn 1 and, in the aftermath of the incident, the Jimgainer Ferrari passed the two cars at once to take the second.

Being far ahead of the battle for second, Sasaki went through the remaining laps without any hitch and R&D Sport Legacy B4 claimed the victory from the polo position with a large 25 second margin. This was the team's second win of the season, following to the first one at Suzuka - the fifth round.

SG Changi IS350 finished in third, followed by Evangelion RT Test Type-01 Apple Shiden and ZENT Porsche RSR in fourth and fifth respectively. Hasepro MA Iwasaki apr Corolla was running in sixth until the last corner of the final lap but the car's engine blew there and the Corolla was forced to hand the sixth place to JLOC Lamborghini RG-3, though it managed to cross the line in seventh.

Having started this round as the championship leader, Hatsune Miku GoodSmile BMW finished the race in ninth and fell back to second in the point standings again. But, with just five points separating the BMW and the new leader, the Jimgainer Ferrari, now these two are only candidates for the title which will be decided in the final round at Motegi.

Driver's Voice
Hironobu Yasuda
 [Result : 5th in the GT500 class]
"Bjorn did a good job of gaining a lot of positions in the early stage. During my stint, the condition of my front tires weren't very good but the rear tires were OK, so I was able to overtake two Hondas, Weider and Keihin. As we had such a good pace in the race, it was all the more regrettable that we were dead last in the qualifying. But we did a good race at least...
"Finishing in fifth was a good result as well and we are happy with the fact that we were able to perform equally or slightly better than the users of other tire manufacturers today. The lower temperatures and cooler weather on Sunday apparently favored us and the ADVAN tires. As the extreme conditions, such as quite a hot or cold weather, seems to work as a positive factor for us, I am looking forward to the final round in Motegi and the JAF Grand Prix race after that. I am sure that we will be able to race equally with the leading cars in these final races, as we did today."

Tetsuya Yamano
 [Result : 1st in the GT300 class]
"I couldn't be happier! It isn't easy to win twice a year in this Super GT series but we won it again only after six weeks since our first victory in late August. It's just unbelievable. The most important factor for this win was the team's effort to prepare a perfect car. Also I'm very thankful to Kota for securing the pole position because I could start the race from the best grid, which made my drive a lot easier.
"I focused on pulling away from the field during the first three laps because the last thing I would want was being passed by the FIA-GT cars. That was my main concern but, after the first three laps, I was able to manage the tires throughout my stint. Our Legacy B4 has been improved very much in comparison with its performance in the first half of the season. We hope to have another good race in the final round and conclude our best season ever on a high note."

Engineer's Voice
Jun Arakawa
"As ADVAN Kondo GT-R had to start from the back end of the grids, the team gave the softer tires to Wirdheim at the start, hoping for gaining some positions in the early stage, and the harder ones for Yasuda's stint later. On the other hand, we knew WedsSport ADVAN SC430 would be able to run in very consistent pace throughout a long stint. Therefore, they had a plan to extend the first stint as long as possible and both drivers for the car used the medium tires.
"Considering their starting positions, ADVAN Kondo GT-R finishing in fifth and WedsSport ADVAN SC430 in seventh were good results and we really appreciate the great jobs of the two teams and their drivers. At the same time, we have to admit that, if the two cars had started the race from better grid positions, their final result would have been better than fifth and seventh. So the qualifying performance is the area for improvement in future.
"As for the GT300, R&D Sport Legacy B4 had the perfect race. The team chose the softer tires from the available range for this round and claimed the pole position. Therefore, they wanted to pull away as much as possible in the early stage of the race. But the temperatures dropped on Sunday and it could be said that the weather favored them in terms of the tire performance. If it had been warmer and the track temperature had risen, they might have struggled. Yamano did a great job to manage his softer tires to let them last until driver change and Sasaki used the tires with one step harder compound in the second half of the race."
