The FIA World Touring Car Championship came back to Belgium for the first time since 2005, the inaugural year of the pinnacle of the world's touring car sprint races. Circuit Zolder is well known as one of the Grand Prix circuits in the past, but it was the first time for this race track to host the Belgian round of WTCC, because the previous round in the country were held at Spa Francorchamps.
The sky was overcast on Sunday in Zolder. At the rolling start of Race 1, Jordi Gene starting from the second grid made a move on the pole sitter, Gabriele Tarquini, and managed to get the lead position after a side-by-side battle with his teammate through Turn 2 and 3. Meanwhile, there was an accident in the opposite end of the field and Darryl O'Young who sat on the 14th grid fell back to the last place in the aftermath, but fortunately it didn't cause any interruption.
Gene's SEAT Leon TDi performed well on this undulating race track of Zolder and he built up a more than two second gap with Tarquini in second before the race came to the halfway point. The Spaniard's position wasn't threatened by the Italian teammate until the finish and got on the top of the podium for the second time in WTCC since his first one in 2008.
But Gene was robbed of the glory afterwards because a technical infringement on the air intake restrictor of his SEAT Leon TDi was found at the scrutineering after the race and the race steward decided to exclude him from the race results. Consequently, the final result of Race 1 was amended as Tarquini in first, Yvan Muller in second and Alan Menu in third.
YOKOHAMA Independent Trophy class saw some close battles particularly in the middle phase of the race. The stars of the class were Pierre-Yves Corthals who made the first appearance of this season in a petrol engined SEAT Leon and Kristian Poulsen in a BMW 320is. Starting from the 15th grid, Poulsen made some intrepid attacks against the fastest qualifier of the class, Corthals, and they soon launched a fierce tail-to-nose fight. On Lap 8, the Danish driver finally overtook the local veteran and scored his first victory in the class.
The pole sitter of Race 2 was Andy Priaulx who finished the first race in eighth, as the decision to exclude Gene wasn't made yet. The Spaniard actually sat on the eighth grid but was forced to retire due to a turbo problem only after making a formation lap before the start.
At the standing start for Race 2, the BMW ace made a good getaway when the red signals turned off and went through Turn 1 as the race leader. On the other hand, another front row starter, Norbert Michelisz in a Zengo-Dension Team's SEAT Leon TDi, made a costly mistake at the start and lost a lot of ground.
The front runners of the field lapped around the track in the exactly same order with the starting grid less Michelisz. As Rob Huff in a Chevrolet Cruze followed closely behind the Priaulx's BMW, two "British" drivers were leading in two different manufacturer's cars. The race was then settled and there were no position changes between the front runners.
The procession eventually continued until the finish and Priaulx secured his third win of the season. As BMW Team RBM for which the man from Guernsey drives is based in Mechelen, Belgium, it was also a victory on the team's home soil which can generate additional momentum for them for the rest of season. Huff finished in second, followed by Tiago Monteiro in a SEAT Leon TDi. As a result, the three places on the podium of Race 2 were shared among the three manufacturers.
YOKOHAMA Independent class win was hotly fought again. The early leader was Poulsen who won the Race 1 but Sergio Hernandez in a Scuderia Proteam Motorsport's BMW took over the position on Lap 4.
During Lap 8 and 9, the Danish driver attacked Hernandez really hard but the Spaniard fended it off to keep his lead position. But this battle was ended by a non-Independent class runner, Tom Coronel in a SEAT, who overtook Poulsen and stayed between them. This certainly helped Hernandez so much to score his third class victory since the curtain raiser event of the season.
