After a four week interval since the previous race event in Sepang, the 2010 Super GT series now entered the second half of the season. The venue of the fifth round was Sportsland Sugo. In terms of both temperatures and the fierceness of battles, this has normally been "the hottest round", although there have been a few exceptions a rainy and unseasonably cool temperatures lately. But the 2010 version of the event was very hot again and the surface temperature on the qualifying day reached as high as 52 °F which was much higher than that of Sepang round in Malaysia! However, it wasn't beyond the range foreseen by the ADVAN's engineering staff and the two types of rubber they brought in, medium soft and medium, surely covered the temperature range without any problem.
In the official practice sessions on Saturday, HIS ADVAN KONDO GT-R (car no.24) struggled because the team didn't have enough time to change the car set-up after receiving a new spec engine which other GT-Rs had already had in the Sepang round. As a result, the car was only the tenth fastest in the practice and had to settle for the 11th grid for the race in the subsequent qualifying session, without showing its true performance in the Super Lap session.
Although the race was rather uneventful, which is not unusual for a Sugo round, the starting driver of HIS ADVAN KONDO GT-R, J.P.de Oliveira, steadily drove his long stint and changed to Hironobu Yasuda at the end of Lap 51. As their pit stop was later than the others', the car became the lap leader on that lap.
After resuming the race in sixth, Yasuda's pace was very consistent despite many incidents happening on the track during his stint. Eventually, he was able to finish in fifth because the race leader had had a mechanical problem in the closing stage. Consequently, the Kondo's team added six points in the drivers' and nine points in the teams' championship to stay in seventh in both point standings.
The race of the GT300 class was a perfect game for Apple K-One Shiden (car no.2), entered by Cars Tokai Dream28, which had to endure a series of frustrating races in Fuji and Sepang, the third and fourth rounds. After setting promising times in the practice, the car's ace driver, Hiroki Katoh, registered the fastest times in the first and second qualifying sessions, which meant he dominated all the sessions on Saturday.
Starting from the pole position, the Shiden with Katoh at the wheel easily pulled away from the rest of the field. As he built up a large advantage during his 52 lap stint, Hiroshi Hamaguchi was able to join the race as the leader even after making a mandatory pit stop and driver change from Katoh. And Hamaguchi's pace was good enough to retain the position until the finish and he had a more than 20 second gap with the runner-up car when the checkered flag fell.
In sharp contrast to the solitary journey of Apple K-One Shiden, the cars behind displayed some close battles. Evangelion RT Test Type-01 apr Corolla (car no.31) tried to follow the Shiden in the early stage but was gradually reeled into the pack which was fighting for the third place. The Corolla managed to stay in second when everyone had completed the pit stop but then was overtaken by Hasemi Sport Tomica Z (car no.3) in the final stage of the race and finished in third to get on the crew's maiden podium.
Besides getting the second place on the podium, Hasemi Sport Tomica Z was also given the Jump-up Award, as the car finished in second despite starting the race from the lowly 12th grid due to a crash during its qualifying lap. Even the normally outspoken team principal, Masahiro Hasemi, had to say that "For today, I would like to praise our drivers!" for their very good job that made up for the mistake in the qualifying session.
The championship leader, M7 Mutiara Motors Amemiya SGC 7 (car no.7) which scored its second win of the season in Sepang, endured a tough race with an 80kg handicap weight but managed to add four points by finishing in seventh. This was enough for the car to stay in the top slot of the championship, although now the position is shared with Hasemi Sport Tomica Z which finished in second in this race.
Another car that carried an 80kg weight, Up Start Mola Z (car no.46), also managed to take eighth place and now in third in the point standings just one point behind the joint leaders. This means the ADVAN equipped teams dominate the top three slots of the GT300 class championship.
