The biggest selling point of the World Touring Car Championship event is
the close battles all around the circuit. This was true of the thirteenth
and fourteenth races of the series held at Brands Hatch and spectators
fully enjoyed the fascinating and thrilling competition on the time-honored
British race track.
Augusto Farfus was the fastest driver in the qualifying session on Saturday.
"We found a very good car setup", the BMW driver said, looking
for a good result in the race. He was followed by two Chevrolet drivers,
Alain Menu and Rob Huff, which certainly enhanced the presence of the American
marque.
On Sunday, the sky was overcast but the track surfaces were dry. At five
past one p.m., after a formation lap, red lamps went off and Race 1 (the
thirteenth race of the series) started.
Immediately after the start, in the midst of the fierce battle, Farfus
and Menu made contact and the former's BMW 320si crashed into the barriers,
resulting in retirement on the spot. It was something like deja vu, as
there was also an accident between them in last year's Brands Hatch round!
Exploiting the chaos created by the incident, Huff took the top slot and
tried to pull away. Jorg Muller's BMW followed in second and the battle
for the third position unfolded between Yvan Muller (SEAT) and Andy Priaulx
(BMW). With virtually no space between them on the track, the latter physically
pushed the former's tail from time to time.
Driving a Volvo C30, which was running on bio fuel and making its debut
in this series, Robert Dahlgren ran around twelfth along with James Thompson's
Honda Accord. Just before this round, a WTCC official announced it would
use the second generation bio fuel which is made from wastes or non-food
farm produce to enhance its environment-friendly attitude. The Volvo was
a focus of attention in this aspect and displayed equal performance with
the conventional cars. Dahlgren actually fought against Thompson side-by-side,
until he went off the course on Lap 11.
Many expected that Huff would keep the lead position to the finish, but
surprisingly he went off a course himself on Lap 12. Consequently, Jorg
Muller inherited the position and scored his first win of the season, followed
by Yvan Muller and Priaulx.
After a shorter than usual interval, Race 2 (the fourteenth race of the
series) was ready to start. According to the reverse grid rule, Menu sat
on the pole position and Gabriele Tarquini (SEAT) and Felix Porteiro (BMW)
followed in second and third respectively.
Porteiro made a splendid standing start and went into Turn 1, with Menu
and Tarquini following behind. Meanwhile, Jordi Gene (SEAT) was hit by
Tom Coronel and sent into the tire barriers, making contact with James
Thompson's Honda Accord in the process. This caused a Safety Car intervention.
After the race resumed on Lap 6, Menu dived into a space inside of the
race leader, Porteiro, and robbed him of the position. In the following
echelon, Tiago Monteiro (SEAT), Farfus and Huff entered a close neck and
neck battle on Lap 8, which entertained the spectators.
The three car battle was won by Farfus who ended Race 1 in disappointing
retirement. The Brazilian had to start from the tail end of the grids but
he displayed a furious pursuit and eventually finished sixth, registering
the fastest lap time of the race on his way.
On the other hand, Menu kept the lead position with impunity until the
finish. It was his third straight win at Brands Hatch, since the Swiss
driver scored the maiden win for Chevrolet here in 2006.
