The season closer of the 2008 China Circuit Championship (CCC) took place
at the Shanghai Tianma Circuit, instead of the Shanghai F1 Circuit (as
originally planned), the venue of the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix and
in proximity of the Tianma race track.
This was the first ever CCC round held at the Tianma circuit. But it is the home course for Shanghai VW 333 Racing and one of the regular venues of the VW Polo Cup races for which YOKOHAMA supplies one spec control tires. Therefore, it was anticipated that the drivers of Shanghai VW 333 Racing, or those who had competed in the Polo Cup, would have the upper hand.
The anticipation proved to be true in the qualifying session on Friday. Han Han, of Shanghai VW 333 Racing drove a Polo and got the pole position with a lap time of 1'08"720, breaking his own course record at the track.
He was followed by Lin LiFeng in a Dongfeng Nissan's Tiida which carried a relatively lighter weight handicap, as Han Han's car did. Wang Rui, in another Shanghai VW 333 Racing Polo qualified in fourth, sandwiched between the drivers from rival teams - one of them had some experience in Polo Cup races and another was an ex-333 Racing driver! The championship leader, Guo HaiSheng, placed his Dongfeng Nissan Tiida on the sixth grid.
Under a clear sky, a crowd gathered to watch the race on Saturday afternoon. Soon after the start, Wang Rui was hit by his championship rival from behind but narrowly escaped a spin and maintained his position. However, he was hit again when he was lapping a back marker - it was extremely difficult to lap slower cars because the circuit is short and tight - and, unfortunately, one of his wheels was badly damaged from the contact. After changing the wheel, he had to push hard to recover from 12th, looking to gaining as many points as possible for the championship.
On Lap 17, Lin LiFeng, running in second, was then given a drive through penalty for his jump start. He resumed the race in seventh but managed to move up to fifth a few laps after that.
In front of him, the contention intensified for second between Guo HaiSheng and two of his championship rivals, as they were running in a close pack from the start. But, on Lap 28, just after Guo HaiSheng overtook one of his rivals, he was bumped from behind by another opponent who lost control of his car because of his worn out tires.
Guo HaiSheng was able to rejoin the race in fourth but another racer's car halted in the middle of track, which caused an interruption of the race with a red flag. Following the restart, the race was terminated after only one lap with the safety car for the purpose of just completing the minimum number of laps to declare the end of the race.
As a result, Han Han won the race, followed by Lin LiFeng. Guo HaiSheng's fourth-place finish gave him the first championship title in two years and Dongfeng Nissan Ghiasports Team won the teams' championship.
The stars of the 2000cc class race were the YOKOHAMA equipped drivers again. Starting from the second grid, Huang ChuHan's Mazda overtook his main rival at the first corner and led the rest of the field. Billy Tsang in an Accord entered by Guangzhou Honda followed him to form a one-two by YOKOHAMA shoed cars.
While these two contended for the top slot in the early stage, Huang ChuHan was given a drive through penalty for a foul start and he lost ground. Consequently, Billy Tsang found himself in a comfortable leading position and kept it throughout the race. This was the first ever win for the TSB Huayang Racing team in their second season in the CCC and Billy Tsang finished the season in second in the point standings with this win.
In the finale of the longer than usual 2008 season, YOKOHAMA displayed superior performance with its products both in the 1600cc and 2000cc classes. With so many YOKOHAMA users finishing the season high in the ranks in the championship point standings, it proved to be the number one tire brand both in word and action in the Chinese motor sport field.
