The FIA World Touring Car Championship is the pinnacle of touring car races and the championship rounds are held at eleven venues around the world. The fifteenth and sixteenth rounds took place at Oschersleben located 30km southeast of Magdeburg, Germany.

In this event, the SEAT camp came into the spotlight. To begin with, the Independent class contender, GR Asia, entered a third driver, Russian youngster Timur Sadredinov in addition to its regular drivers, Tom Coronel and Maurizio Ceresoli. Sadredinov is only nineteen years old and set a new record as the youngest driver in the history of WTCC.

Secondly, Yvan Muller and Jordi Gene also attracted much attention because they both drove the diesel powered SEAT Leon TDIs that the SEAT Sport team introduced in the last event at Anderstorp. Muller finished in sixth in Race 1 of the Swedish round and higher finishing positions were expected for the diesel powered cars in Germany.

On Saturday, August 25th, the qualifying session was held after two official practice sessions. The fastest driver in the first practice was Andy Priaulx of BMW and then James Thompson of Alfa Romeo took the top slot in the second practice session. However, it was the SEAT drivers who performed better than the others in the qualifying session. Gabriele Tarquini took the pole position in his petrol engine Leon and was followed by Muller's diesel engine Leon TDI with only an 0.011 sec. gap. This meant that the front row was occupied by SEATs with two different types of engines.

At five past noon on Sunday, August 26th, the fifteenth round (Race 1) started under a clear sky and on a dry surface. But soon after the twenty-five cars got off their grids, a multi car crash occurred in the back of the field and the Safety car came in.

The race resumed on Lap 4 and Muller, who was in second, pushed his teammate, Tarquini, while watching for the opportunity to overtake him. Then on Lap 5, the Frenchman attacked at turn 1 and went inside of his teammate in the tight right-hander. As his move proved to be a success, the diesel powered car became the race leader. Meanwhile, Thompson, in the third position, tried to squeeze his Alfa Romeo between the two leading SEATs but he couldn't disturb the one-two formation of the Spanish marque.

Accordingly, Muller and his SEAT Leon TDI took the checkered flag of the 16 lap race. It was a historic first ever win for a diesel engine car in world championship race.

The sixteenth round (Race 2) began at five past four p.m. Because of the reverse grid system, Roberto Colciago started from the pole position but he was involved in an incident at Turn 1 and was pushed off the course, resulting in a substantial drop in his track position.

Augusto Farfus Jr. of BMW Team Germany took over the lead position and the reigning champion Andy Priaulx of BMW Team UK followed. Both BMW drivers wouldn't give way to each other as they were competing in the championship point standings. After some close battles within a 0.2 sec. gap, Priaulx tried to overtake Farfus and came beside him on Lap 10 but the latter firmly held his position.

Eventually, Farfus kept his lead until the fourteenth and final lap and scored his third win of the season which was quite valuable for his championship quest. The winner of Race 1, Muller finished in fifth and another diesel powered SEAT driven by Gene took third place and this proved the potential of TDI diesel engine cars again in Race 2.

Born in Spain, December 5th, 1970.

After taking the title crown of the Spanish Kart Championship in 1987, he stepped up to car race the following year and competed in the Spanish Formula Fiat Uno Championship series. He became very prominent by winning the championship that year before taking the title of the Spanish Formula Ford Championship the next year. In 1991, he started to compete in Formula three and scored a win in the Fuji International Formula 3 League. Next year, he also marked a win in FIA F3000 series.
From 1995, he turned to the tin-top races and won the 1996 Spanish Super Touring Car Championship title with five wins driving for Audi. After winning the LMP675 class in the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 2001, he took part in the FIA European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) beginning in the 2002 season. Since 2005, he has been driving for SEAT in the WTCC.

The 3.696m race track opened in 1997. It hosted not only car races such as the German Touring Car Championship (DTM: Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft), the FIA-GT Championship or Formula three events, but kart racing and motorcycle racing events. The WTCC races have been held at this circuit since its inaugural year and the circuit was also one of the regular venues for the ETCC for years.
Andy Priaulx has always been a hot favorite at this race track. After his first win in Race 2 of the ETCC event in 2003, he won at least one race every year until 2006 (Race 1 of the ETCC in 2004, Race 1 of the WTCC in 2005 and Race 1 of the WTCC in 2006)! Unfortunately for him, he narrowly missed a win this year and the consecutive win record was stopped, but his finishing in second still proved that he is the man to watch in Oschersleben.
