After starting its season very late, the China Circuit Championship moved
to Beijing where the second round of the series was held.
The Beijing Golden Port International Circuit has a compact configuration
and its length is only 2.4km with many corners in succession. In addition
to that, the surface is always dirty and abrasive for tires, kind of like
a sandpaper, which means that tires wear much faster than usual. Because
tire changes during the race was mandatory last year, tire wear was not
an issue in setting up the cars, but the competitors have to run through
the finish with no tire changes this year. Therefore, teams tried to find
out a good set up to go faster with consideration given to the wear rate
of tires.
In the second round of the series, the pair of Wang Rui and Han Han driving
Volkswagen POLOs run by the Shanghai VW 333 Racing, and another pair from
the Dongfeng Nissan Ghiasports Team, Guo Haisheng and Lin Lifeng, driving
Nissan TIIDAs, continued to be in good shape. As in the same fashion as
the season opener, the top four slots in the qualifying session were occupied
by these four cars all equipped with YOKOHAMA tires again and, the winner
of the last race, Wang Rui took the back-to-back pole position.
With the temperature above 30℃, the race started. With the pole sitter
Wang Rui, Guo Haisheng and Han Han qualified in second and third respectively
and formed the leading echelon. Meanwhile, Lin Lifeng, who finished the
last race in third, made a mistake at the start and was engulfed by the
following cars. But he recovered to sixth at the end of the opening lap
and then came back to fourth (where he qualified) on Lap 5.
From Lap 13, back markers were being lapped by the leaders, and the expertise
of the leading competitors in passing the slower cars appeared to be the
key to victory. Indeed, thanks to a back marker, Han Han in third quickly
reduced the gap with Guo Haisheng in second and passed him on Lap 17 when
Haisheng got stuck with another back marker to form a one-two of the Shanghai
VW 333 Racing's POLOs.
The top four cars continued to lap at a high and consistent pace, but a
twist awaited them in the closing stage of the race. Guo Haisheng, running
in third, was unexpectedly blocked by a back marker and had to brake hard
to avoid a collision. This caused severe damage to his front tires and
he was forced to his pit to change tires. Although he resumed the race
with new front tires, the delay was crucial and only five minutes to the
finish was not enough for him to rejoin the leading echelon.
Eventually, Wang Rui scored the second consecutive win with Shanghai VW
333 Racing's POLO, having kept a 1 minute 13 seconds bracket pace throughout
the race. He was followed by his teammate Han Han and the back-to-back
one-two finish for the team was accomplished. Lin Lifeng of Dongfeng Nissan's
TIIDA came in third, which meant the same lineup on the podium as in the
season opener. With all drivers below fourth lapped by the top three finishers,
the superiority of YOKOHAMA tires was confirmed again.
The third round will be held at Zhuhai, Guangdong which is torrid and thousands
of kilometer south of Beijing. As the CCC adopts the success weight penalty
system, the three drivers on the podium in the first two races of the season
have to carry more weight on their cars and it may induce a somewhat different
situation in the next round. The Zhuhai International Circuit is the home
track of the reigning champion, Guo Haisheng, who has been ill-fated in
the last two races and a fierce battle can be expected because he won't
carry any penalty weight in the third round. Anyway, the Zhuhai round will
certainly feature those four YOKOHAMA users out in front again, just to
demonstrate the performance of YOKOHAMA tires.
